Notifications to paper authors have been sent

The selection of the scientific program of the 8th Balkan Conference in Informatics has been finished, and all the notifications to paper authors have been sent as scheduled.

BCI 2017 received 41 papers from authors coming from 14 countries and accepted 17 full (8 pages) papers (41% acceptance rate). We accepted also 10 short (4 pages) papers on new ideas and work-in-progress. We decided all papers (full and short) to be checked when submitted as a camera-ready version and IF are fully following ACM ICPC conference format, and responded to reviewers comments, to be included in the ACM proceedings of BCI 2017, of course if at least one author will register and will present the paper at the conference.

Guruduth Banavar

Guru believes in applying deep technology innovations to solve major problems that humanity faces, especially in healthcare and education. He is known for his work on Watson AI, Smarter Cities, Services Innovation, Mobile Computing, and Distributed Systems.
 Guru is currently developing AI systems at Viome, a wellness company that offers unprecedented visibility into the biological ecosystem inside each of us and delivers ongoing recommendations to improve wellness with a personalized diet and lifestyle plan. Until recently, he was a senior technology executive at IBM responsible for advancing Watson AI technologies and solutions, and was a member of CEO Ginni Rometty’s top executive team.
 Guru is a recognized thought leader who has spoken on the Nobel, Aspen, Milken, and Turing stages. His work has been featured in major international media including the New York Times, Economist, Wall Street Journal, and NPR. He received a national innovation award from the President of India, and has served on NY Governor Cuomo’s commission for state resiliency. Guru has served on various industry and academic boards, and was an elected member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He has published extensively and holds more than 25 US patents.

The new era of AI will revolutionize our wellness

The resurgence of AI is changing every aspect of our lives.  Many new kinds of data are becoming available in every field, making possible new insights and approaches that were unthinkable a few years ago.  In this talk and paper, we provide a broad overview of the new capabilities of AI platforms that is making this revolution possible, and dive deeply into one specific AI application that is showing great promise to help us understand the biological ecosystem inside each of us, and improve our health and wellness.  These new AI systems create high-resolution models of each individual’s microbiome and metabolome, and applies knowledge-based reasoning and machine learning to modern medical science to produce the best wellness plan for each individual.

Lira Nikolovska


Lira Nikolovska is Director of Experience Design in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Product Line Group at Autodesk in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.  She is a seasoned design professional with over 20 years of experience in user experience design, strategic design, design research and product development across diverse range of industries and technologies including consumer electronics, BIM software, furniture and pervasive computing, mobile and cloud applications for building operations, etc. Lira’s academic background includes Ph.D. in Design Computation from MIT School of Architecture and Planning.  She was affiliated with the Computing Culture Group at the MIT Media Lab, taught at Rhode Island School of Design, and has served as a curator, chair and reviewer for range of conferences including SIGGRAPH, SimAUD and CHI. She holds 17 patents and is recipient of the ACADIA 2012 Award for Innovative Research. Her current work at Autodesk includes crafting the experience design vision for the next generation cloud based software for the building industry.

Project Quantum: Designing for the Next Generation BIM Ecosystem

Technological developments have reshaped virtually every aspect of how we live and work, including how we design and make buildings. As making buildings is increasingly mediated through digital technology, it has also evolved into an incredibly complex and decentralized process. Design, fabrication and construction are carried out by numerous teams of globally distributed professionals. These different groups take on specialized tasks on aggressive schedules, causing project phases to become more and more fragmented.

Autodesk pioneered Building Information Modeling and has made inroads pushing beyond parametric modeling and document generation for Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) to include building analysis tools and even fabrication level detail. Still, managing and orchestrating design changes has become more complex than ever before, requiring significant technical expertise and generating immense quantities of data.

This talk will shed light on experience design aspects of Project Quantum, Autodesk’s next generation BIM cloud-enabled ecosystem. The goals of this ambitious project is to enable end users to coordinate changes real-time, from the concept design of the building all the way to fabrication and construction, and to streamline fabrication of building parts directly from the building information model.

Sanja Lazarova-Molnar


Sanja Lazarova-Molnar is an Associate Professor at the Center for Energy Informatics, within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark. Her rich academic experience spans over four countries: Macedonia, Germany, United Arab Emirates and Denmark. Sanja obtained her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University “Otto-von-Guericke” in Magdeburg, Germany, where she was also a member of the Simulation Group at the Institute of Simulation and Graphics. Her current research interests include: modeling and simulation of stochastic systems, reliability modeling, decision support for decentralized energy systems, energy informatics and data-based approaches to fault detection and diagnosis.

Future Energy Systems: Challenges and Data

We are progressing towards greener and more decentralized energy systems, which implies relying on highly uncertain, but critical and highly complex, infrastructures for power. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are necessary to enable higher quality operation of energy systems in terms of safety, reliability, sustainability and cost, among other performance criteria. Through facilitating the continuous collection and processing of large amounts of data, ICT have the potential to completely transform the way that energy systems are being designed and operated, in light of meeting their objectives. Two of these new and promising technologies are the Internet of Things and Cloud Computing.

The aim of this talk is to point out the challenges of the future energy systems, identifying the potential of ICT to respond to a significant number of these challenges. A particular focus will be placed on the role of Smart Buildings in the future energy systems, as one of the highest impact consumers and potential energy producers, i.e. future prosumers.
